From Sea to Smiles: Children from Furano Discover the Joy of the Ocean in Atsuma

NPO Miraito held a two-day experiential program on September 6–7 in Atsuma Town, bringing children from Furano where the sea is far away closer to coastal life through fishing and clam-shucking activities. The program was proudly sponsored by the Furapera Community Aid Network in collaboration with Giveinstead.sg.

On the first day, under clear skies, participants waded at the shoreline, tried their hand at fishing, and ended the evening with a lively barbecue. While the group mostly reeled in pufferfish, every catch sparked cheers of excitement. The night concluded with a fireworks display generously donated by supporters, leaving children dazzled by the colors against the seaside sky.

The second day took the group to the fishing port for a hands-on hokki (surf clam) shucking experience. Guided by local fishermen, the children learned step by step, quickly mastering the technique. Freshly grilled with butter, the clams were enjoyed on the spot, with delighted voices exclaiming “Delicious!”

For many participants, growing up in Furano without the sea, this was their very first encounter with such experiences. Beyond fun and discovery, the program offered them confidence, connection, and memories that will last.
